Cal Fruit Bowl
Makes 6 servings
Ingredients:
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 to 2 fresh serrano peppers* halved lengthwise
2 teaspoons finely shredded lime peel
4 teaspoons lime juice
3 cups melon balls (watermelon, cantaloupe, and/or honeydew)
1 large apple or pear, cored and cut into chunks
2 medium plums, pitted and sliced
Directions
For syrup, in a small saucepan, combine water, sugar, serrano peppers, and lime juice
Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 minutes
Remove from heat; cool to room temperature
Strain syrup into a large serving bowl; discard peppers and seeds
Stir in lime peel
Add melon balls, apple or pear, and plums; stir gently to coat
Cover and chill 1 to 4 hours before serving
*Note: For a milder flavor, serrano peppers may be omitted.
Adding hot chile peppers to a sugar syrup for fruit may sound strange, but the end product will surprise you. The sweet, yet spunky finish to melons and fall fruit is so simple, yet so tantalizing. Not up for the excitement? Make it without the peppers.
